What is Wing Tsun?

Wing Tsun is one of the most popular martial arts in the world today. The originally Chinese Kung Fu system gained worldwide fame through Yip Man and his student Bruce Lee.

The quality of the Wing Tsun system lies in its effectiveness and efficiency in self-defence. This is one of the reasons why Wing Tsun is also trained by state security forces (e.g. SEK). However, it can be learned by anyone, regardless of gender, age or physical condition.

In Wing Tsun, we do not use brute force or acrobatic movements. Moreover, the martial art refers to a life-affirming practice that enables the user to go through many conceivable social struggles without exhausting himself. This makes Wing Tsun an art of living.

The Principles

Wing Tsun is a system and not a methodology. By following principles, the techniques taught arise on their own due to reflex training. Every Wing Tsun practitioner should know and internalise these principles.

Fighting Principles

#1 When the way is clear, advance
Find gaps in the opponent's defence and close them.

#2 If you get contact, stick.
If I meet resistance when closing a gap, contact must be maintained.

#3 If the force is too great, give way
If the opponent's force is too great, our body must move to dissipate the pressure or let the opponent's force go completely nowhere.

#4 If the opponent retreats, follow him.
If the opponent moves away, contact should be maintained or re-established as soon as possible.

Force Principles

#1 Free yourself from your own power
More specifically, free yourself from your tension.

#2 Free yourself from the opponent's power.
Do not match the strength of the opponent. Otherwise the stronger one wins.

#3 Use the power of the opponent
Use the opponent's power for yourself through intelligent yielding, absorbing or shock techniques.

#4 Add your own power
Ultimately, one's own power should be added to the opponent's power.
